The experienced professionals at Urology Associates of Southeastern NC have integrated their areas of expertise to bring patients throughout southeastern North Carolina a highly-skilled consortium, addressing all issues of urological disease.

John W. Lovett, M.D.

John W. Lovett, M.D. was born in Detroit, MI and raised in western Kentucky, where he attended Davidson College and The University of Kentucky School of Medicine. He completed his surgical internship there and later completed a urology residency at the Medical University of South Carolina.

John is board certified in Urology by the American Board of Urology and affiliated with New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He is also a member of the American Urological Association, the Southeastern Section of the AUA, the New Hanover/Pender County Medical Society (of which he was also president for a period) and the North Carolina Medical Society.

Dr. Lovett received advanced post-graduate training in ESWL (extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy), lasers in Urology, Greenlight laser photovaporizaton of the prostate (PVP), and performs state of the art bipolar TURP with Plasma Button. Areas of particular interest and experience include: Transurethral laser treatment and bipolar resection of obstructing prostate disorders; diagnosis, counseling and management of all forms of urinary stones and prostate cancer.

Other areas of particular interest and experience include: Laparoscopic renal surgery, Restorative Urology [including surgical correction of female stress incontinence, male stress incontinence, erectile dysfunction(ED)]; transurethral laser treatment and bipolar resection of obstructing prostate disorders; diagnosis, counseling and management of prostate cancer.

William A. Russell, III, M.D.

Originally from Maryland, Dr. Russell attended college at George Washington University, Medical School at Duke, and completed a residency at University of Florida. He has practiced urology in Wilmington since 1992. He is board certified by the American Board of Urology. He performs surgery at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

His areas of specialty interest include robotic surgery, urologic cancers, kidney stones, and vasectomies.

He and his wife Barbara feel blessed to have raised three children in Wilmington. He has been on many medical mission trips internationally, and enjoys surfing, mountain biking, and other activities in the woods or on the water.

Edward W. Whitesides, M.D.

Edward Whitesides, M.D. was born in Cologne, Germany while his father was an opera singer in Europe. The family moved back to the U.S. when he was 3 years old, and he grew up in Columbus, Ohio and Louisville, Kentucky. He attended college at Davidson College and attended medical school and urology training at UNC Chapel Hill. After completing training in the summer of 1993, he and his family moved to Wilmington, and he has been working at UASENC and New Hanover Regional Medical Center since that time.

Dr. Whitesides practices general urology from both a medical and surgical side with main areas of focus on benign and malignant prostate disorders and kidney stones. He also manages issues with all types of urination difficulty, incontinence, urinary tract infections and other urologic malignancies (kidney, bladder and testis). He is not specially trained in pediatric urology, but enjoys seeing children and helping with basic urologic problems that they may have.

He has maintained board certification by the American Board of Urology since 1996 and is a member of the American Urologic Association and the NC and New Hanover-Pender County Medical Societies. He has served as President of the local Medical Society and has been a delegate to the state society meeting. He was also department chairman for the Department of Specialty Surgery at NHRMC. He also was on the Wilmington SurgCare staff.

Edward Whitesides, M.D. has been married since 1985 and he and his wife have 4 grown children. He enjoys all types of sports, travel, camping and hiking in our National Parks.

Peter A. Zeman, M.D.

A native of Cary, North Carolina, Dr. Peter Zeman graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with Honors in 1995 and earned his Doctorate of Medicine in 2000, both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then completed a general surgery internship followed by a residency in Urology at Boston University. He joined Urology Associates of Southeastern North Carolina in 2005.

Dr. Zeman is board certified by the American Board of Urology. He is a member of the American Urological Association, NC Medical Society and New Hanover– Pender County Medical Society. His clinical expertise includes stone disease, oncology, benign prostate diseases, vasectomies, incontinence, overactive bladder, impotence and low testosterone. He performs surgery at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He resides in Wilmington with his wife, Jamie and their two sons.

Dr. Will Kirby, M.D.

Dr. Will Kirby, M.D. was born in Greenville, NC and earned his undergraduate degree from Duke University where he graduated with honors. He later attended medical school at Columbia University and completed his Urology residency training at UNC Chapel Hill. Following residency, Dr. Kirby was awarded a fellowship with the pioneer of Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. There he specialized in Male Infertility, Microsurgery and Male Sexual Dysfunction. Dr. Kirby has authored numerous articles and chapters on the subjects of Sexual Dysfunction, Male Infertility and Urology and presented his research at several national meetings.

Now practicing in Wilmington, Dr. Kirby’s areas of specialty include vasectomy reversal, male infertility, male sexual medicine, erectile dysfunction, peyronie’s disease, testosterone therapy, urinary dysfunction, robotic and laparoscopic surgery, urologic cancers, kidney stones and vasectomies. He performs surgery at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He and his wife Hayden feel lucky to be raising their two children in Wilmington.

Gerald Merrell MHS, PA-C

Gerald earned a Masters Degree from Duke University School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program in 1996. He then completed a post graduate Residency in Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine/Yale Hospital/Norwalk Hospital in 1997. Gerald moved to Wilmington in September, 1997. He began his career as a Physician Assistant in Family Practice and Internal Medicine; then joined Urology Associates in December, 1999. His clinical interests include: general urology, stone disease, male erectile dysfunction, female sexual dysfunction, urinary incontinence, bladder pain syndrome and male infertility.

Gerald is a national speaker on urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. He is a member of a national advisory board committee for advances in urinary incontinence. He is also a past member of the National Board.   Gerald is married with three children.

Richard D. Ulstad M.S., PA-C

Richard D. Ulstad M.S., PA-C, CCD is a Urological Physician Assistant at Urology Associates of SENC, PA. He has been a Wilmington resident since 2001. As a Urological PA, his interests include but aren’t limited to: Urogynecological Diseases, Hypogonadism, Kidney Stones, Renal and Bladder Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Interstitial Cystitis, BPH, Male and Female Sexual Dysfunction, ED, Male and Female Incontinence and Voiding Dysfunction. Rick specializes in all aspects of adult and pediatric urology.

Currently, Rick is President of the Cape Fear Chapter Society of SENC PA’s, as well as, Vice President of the National Urologic Academy of Physician Assistants. He is also a member of the AUA, AAPA and the NCAPA. Additionally, Rick is a board certified Clinical Densitometrist. Rick attended the University of Rochester, in Rochester, New York, where he specialized in Medicine, Business, Psychology and Spanish. With a full scholarship, he attended Graduate School at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. For more than 30 years, Rick has been an avid volunteer in all aspects of hands on clinical medicine and research.
